Asia premiere of the all-new Panamera in ShanghaiA true luxury sedan with pure sports gene
Shanghai. As a new member of Porsche’s model range, the new Panamera today saw its Asia premiere in Shanghai. Porsche has systematically improved the Panamera concept – with a sporty four-door luxury sedan that has been redesigned and restyled down to the last detail. Its engines and transmissions have been re-engineered, its chassis perfected, and its display and control concept reinterpreted for the future with multi-touch gesture control. The new Panamera once again extends the boundaries between an ambitious sports car and a comfortable luxury sedan, with technical highlights such as rear axle steering, active roll compensation and three-chamber air suspension.
“The new Panamera reconciles two contrasting characteristics more than ever before: it offers both the performance of a sports car and the comfort of a luxury sedan. It is a true luxury sedan with pure sports gene,” said Mr. Franz Jung, President and Chief Executive Officer of Porsche China. Porsche launched the first generation of the Panamera in Shanghai seven years ago and successfully entered the luxury sports sedan segment. So far, more than 150,000 units of the Panamera have been sold worldwide. And over 46,000 units have been delivered in Mainland China, Hong Kong and Macau, contributing to over 28% of the Panamera’s total sales and making China the biggest single market for the Panamera. “Today, we celebrated the Asia premiere of the second generation of the Panamera back in Shanghai, emphasising Porsche’s long-term commitment to the Chinese market. We will continue to offer better products and services to our Chinese customers,” said Mr. Franz Jung.
Unique design with Porsche DNA
With the Panamera’s unique characteristics, Porsche’s designers have also given the new model a more distinctive appearance. Long and dynamic proportions, a sharpened sports car silhouette, athletic flanks and an extremely fast roof line emphasise the characteristics of a true Porsche. The new Panamera is 5,049 millimetres long (+34 mm), 1,937 millimetres wide (+ 6mm) and 1,423 millimetres high (+ 5mm). The wheelbase has been increased by 30 mm to 2,950 mm. The overall upgraded sizes lengthen the car’s proportions, giving it a lasting and more powerful impression. Recognisable at first glance are the new LED headlights with four-point daytime running lights. In addition, the optimised front fascia and larger air intakes are another characteristic of the new Panamera. The entire rear end is the highlight of the new Panamera. The three-dimensional rear lights in LED technology, with integrated four-point brake lights, create an unmistakable night design. The “flyline” that is typical of Porsche cars forges a stylistic link to the 911 design icon. Larger wheels and twelve body colours, paired with ten different interior colours and leather options, bring an individualised Porsche to customers.
The sports car in the segment of luxury sedans
The Panamera brings the normally contrasting parameters of low fuel consumption and low emission figures into harmony with high power and torque figures. The newly developed V6 and V8 bi-turbo engines have been made more powerful, while improving their fuel economy and reducing emissions.
The 2.9-litre V6 biturbo engine of the Panamera 4S develops 324 kW/440 hp and a maximum torque of 550 Nm. The Panamera 4S can reach 100 km/h in just 4.4 seconds (4.2 seconds with the Sport Chrono Package), with a top speed of 289 km/h. The 4.0-litre biturbo V8 engine of the Panamera Turbo develops 404 kW/550 hp and a maximum torque of 770 Nm. The eight-cylinder engine accelerates the Panamera Turbo to 100 km/h in 3.8 seconds; with the Sport Chrono Package the sprint time is just 3.6 seconds. The Porsche can reach a top speed of 306 km/h. In part-load operation, the system temporarily and imperceptibly turns the eight-cylinder into a four-cylinder engine. In addition, the second generation Panamera is the first model from Porsche to feature an eight-speed dual-clutch transmission from Porsche – PDK II. It can shift without any interruption in tractive power and reduce oil consumption efficiently.
A perfect balance between luxury and comfort
Based on a future-oriented design concept, the interior of the new Panamera looks clean and innovative. Touch-sensitive panels and individually configurable displays dominate the new Porsche Advanced Cockpit, demonstrating the design concept of Porsche’s future sports car. Thanks to the upgraded body sizes, the luxury sedan offers sufficient space and excellent layout variability in the luxury class, making it an extremely practical model for everyday use, with a 40:20:40 split of the folding rear bench backrests – in conjunction with the ski bag option – and 495 to 1,304 litres of luggage capacity. Raising the comfort experience of the Panamera to an entirely new level are new equipment standards such as the panoramic tilt roof, the four-zone automatic climate control with a new ionisation function and a Bose® Surround Sound System; as well as options such as a Burmester® High-End 3D Surround Sound System and the Porsche Rear Seat Entertainment system.
The new chassis combines the cruising comfort of a luxury sedan with the performance of a sports car. An adaptive air suspension with new three-chamber technology, including PASM (Porsche Active Suspension Management) electronic damper control, which is provided as standard in China for 4S and Turbo models, offers excellent driving dynamics and driving comfort. The PASM system reacts to the road condition and driving style. With the adaptive air suspension, both the damper characteristics and the spring rates can be varied and combined. This results in an even greater spread between sportiness and comfort.
Future-oriented infotainment system
The next generation Porsche Communication Management (PCM) system with a 12.3-inch touch display is the most attractive highlight of the car’s interior. User operation is influenced by the new multi-touch control. Moreover, the display recognises handwriting. Features such as online navigation, concierge services, online functions of Connect Plus, and the smartphone integration via Apple CarPlay are all included. Navigation destinations can simply be written onto the screen before the driver sets out. And the PCM will provide the best route. In the journey, it is possible to rotate navigation maps in any desired direction and the route can be updated based on real-time traffic information. On the right side of the display, widgets can be seen and personalised in a user-defined layout. According to the user’s taste or the situation, the widgets can be used to show information such as navigation information, the current playlist or climate control settings, making the display individually configurable.
New assistance systems
The new Panamera is equipped with many standard and optional assistance systems such as a new night vision assistant and LED Matrix headlights with Porsche Dynamic Light System Plus (PDLS Plus), which make life more convenient and safer while driving. With the PDLS Plus, the LED Matrix module alone comprises 84 individually-controlled LEDs, which controls the main beam light distribution intelligently. The night vision assistant utilises a thermal imaging camera to detect people and large animals, and displays a colour-highlighted warning indicator in the cockpit. Other new features, including the enhanced Porsche Dynamic Chassis Control Sport (PDCC Sport) system, with Porsche Torque Vectoring Plus (PTV Plus), rear axle steering, and the integrated Porsche 4D Chassis Control system, also help improve the safety and handling of the new Panamera.
The new Panamera Turbo and 4S will arrive at Porsche Centres in China in early 2017, while the other models will not be available until the second half of next year. The detailed pricing for the new Panamera Turbo and the new Panamera 4S is as follows:
